What We Learned About Cashews in Goa
What We Learned About Cashews in Goa
We went to Goa to find premium Goan cashews.
But the truth shocked us:
Most “Goa cashews’’ sold in shops are NOT from Goa They are actually Tanzanian cashews, imported because:
They look bigger
They look more premium
They are cheaper
They are available in bulk
🇮🇳 Actual Goan cashews are rare And most of them are:
Smaller in size
More expensive
Limited quantity
Mostly sold during the season
Cashew processing is not done in Goa We learned:
Goa only cultivates cashews
Processing mostly happens in Maharashtra
That’s why finding authentic, local, fresh cashews is extremely difficult
We even collected farmer numbers from the Agriculture Office in Goa, but it didn’t help. Processing cashews directly from farmers requires:
Big investment
Storage facilities
Grading units
Expertise in separating quality
Not possible in the early stage. This learning was priceless.
What We Learned About Cashew Grades Cashews are graded based on:
Size
Quantity
Color
Shape
Here are the main grades we studied:
Premium Whole Grades
W150 – king of cashews, rare & expensive
W180 – premium quality (target for Mulakupetti)
W210 – excellent grade
W240 – high-quality grade
Common Grade
W340 – widely sold in Indian markets (most “Goa cashews” in shops are W340 Tanzanian)
Pieces Grades
LWP (Large White Pieces)
SWP (Small White Pieces)
SPLIT
Used for: sweets, ice cream decoration, baking.
After studying cashew grades across markets like Goa, we chose W180 — a perfect balance of premium quality, taste, and value.
This research became the foundation for Mulakupetti Cashews – Kollam Edition (coming soon)…
Why Kollam Is Our Next Destination
Kollam and Goa are the biggest cashew hubs in India.
But Kollam has
Original Indian cashews
Best processing units
Better access to premium W150–W240
Expert-grade sorting
Trusted suppliers
So our next journey is to Kollam for sourcing premium cashews.
Goa Helped Us Improve Our Communication & Branding
We approached hotels, travellers, café owners and premium customers. This improved:
Confidence
Pitching skills
Communication
Language
Body language
Understanding customer needs
Even though we didn’t get all the results we expected, we built premium networks in Goa — including hotels who tasted our pepper and appreciated the aroma.
Chef Reactions to Mulakupetti Black Pepper
Even in Goa, chefs loved our black pepper. They said:
✔ “The aroma is outstanding and instantly noticeable.”
✔ “It has a fresh, mild flavour that works perfectly for everyday cooking.”
✔ “This is very different from the polished, processed pepper commonly sold in stores.”
✔ “You can clearly feel that this is authentic, original Kerala-quality black pepper.”
